Barbican Centre, London
Architektur: Chamberlin, Powell and Bon
Standort: London, London Fertigstellung: 1965-1976
The Barbican Estate, designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, was built between 1965 and 1976 and is one of the largest Brutalist complexes in Europe. It includes over 2,000 residential units, the Barbican Centre (one of Europe’s largest cultural venues), a library, a school, as well as publicly accessible gardens and water features.
Architecturally, the complex is defined by exposed concrete (Béton brut), linear and massive forms, and a clearly structured layout. The elevated pedestrian walkways separate foot traffic from motorized transport, reflecting post-war urban planning principles.
Today, the Barbican is a listed heritage site and is considered a significant example of British post-war urban development.
